"The route to the Greek and Roman Neapolis"
Through the “Via per cryptam” (the street that lead from Pozzuoli to Neapolis crossing the Tunnel of Posillipo) we enter Neapolis, stopping at the roman thermal bath of S. Chiara and proceeding through the gate of piazza San Domenico.
The itinerary starts in piazzetta Trinità Maggiore, in proximity of the Fountain. We’ll reach the Spire of the Immaculate Virgin in piazza del Gesù, and follow down Spaccanapoli to piazza San Domenico to visit the famous statue of the “Body of Naples” and The Sansevero Chapel.

Virgil the wizard and the Crypta Neapolitana

In front of the grandiose Neapolitan Crypt, the tomb of the poet was subject to an uninterrupted stream of visits since the 1st Century, as the goal of many writers’ and poets’ pilgrimages .
Finally in 1939, in the vicinity of Virgil’s crypt, the mortal remains of Giacomo Leopardi were moved from the Church of San Vitale.
A cenotaph is dedicated to him, making this place a tranquil, poetic temple in the heart of the city.

We will visit the marvellous church of the Pietà of the Turchini in which many painted masterpieces are conserved, remembering the 17th Century, the age of gold in Neapolitan painting.
