Route: piazza del Gesù, S. Chiara, San Sebastiano, piazza Bellini, S. Pietro a Maiella, La Pietrasanta, S. Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco, piazza S. Gaetano.

The tour includes the Roman Baths and the Cloister of Santa Chiara or the ruins of San Lorenzo Maggiore

Route 3

"The route to the Greek and Roman Neapolis"

 

Through the “Via per cryptam” (the street that lead from Pozzuoli to Neapolis crossing the Tunnel of Posillipo) we enter Neapolis, stopping at the roman thermal bath of S. Chiara and proceeding through the gate of piazza San Domenico.

The itinerary starts in piazzetta Trinità Maggiore, in proximity of the Fountain. We’ll reach the Spire of the Immaculate Virgin in piazza del Gesù, and follow down Spaccanapoli to piazza San Domenico to visit the famous statue of the “Body of Naples” and The Sansevero Chapel.

"Mirabilia"

The Baroque in Naples: Saints, prodigies, “poor” souls in Purgatory, Baroque festivals

 

S. Gennaro’s treasure, the miraculous liquefaction of the Saint’s blood and the spire dedicated to the Patron of Naples, the church of the Gerolamini, piazza San Gaetano, The S. Gregorio Armeno church and cloister, via Tribunali, the church of S. Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco.

Route 7

Virgil the wizard and the Crypta Neapolitana

 

“Siste viator pauca legito hic Verglilius tumulus est” (Halt traveller, and read these few words: here lies the tomb of Virgil)

In front of the grandiose Neapolitan Crypt, the tomb of the poet was subject to an uninterrupted stream of visits since the 1st Century, as the goal of many writers’ and poets’ pilgrimages .

Finally in 1939, in the vicinity of Virgil’s crypt, the mortal remains of Giacomo Leopardi were moved from the Church of San Vitale.

A cenotaph is dedicated to him, making this place a tranquil, poetic temple in the heart of the city.

Gate to Gate…from Nolana Gate to Capuana Gate

 

At the discovery of the area between the ancient gates of Naples.

The magical amulets of Virgil the Wizard, the ancient ‘Gate of Forcella’ the Maddalena, Castel Capuano and the Aragonese walls, S. Gennaro “nfaccia ‘o Vesuvio” (S. Gennaro facing Vesuvius), the suggestive church of St. Catherine at Formiello and the ‘Capuana Gate’.

Route 10

Via Medina... The Incoronata and the surroundings

From the Greek and Roman port of Neapolis to the Anjou city. The ‘Largo delle corregge’ just outside the walls, between churches and buildings of nobility, made the heart of the court of the Anjou kings. All that remains is the beautiful church of the Incoronata with its particular architecture and its marvellous cycles of frescos.

We will visit the marvellous church of the Pietà of the Turchini in which many painted masterpieces are conserved, remembering the 17th Century, the age of gold in Neapolitan painting.
